My Garden: the solo exhibition by Qian Gang exhibits 45 oil paintings and 6 acrylic paintings, covering his creative output over the past ten or so years since his return to Shanghai. Here, what Qian Gang is demonstrating is “his garden”, but what the audience sees is his world.

It is a world of surrealism and infinite imagination, and also a dreamlike fictional world of romance. Qian Gang always lives in his own world. And inspired by both desires and emotions, he tries to unbosom his secrets and subconscious thoughts through painting, while trying to explore the eternal theme that has driven mankind since ancient times from a new perspective.

About the Artist

Qian Gang

Qian Gang, born in Shanghai in 1958, is that kind of natural artist. Although slow of speech in his childhood, he is keen in insight and has his own unique understanding of everything in the natural world. Being independent in thinking and observant inwardly, Qian Gang finds art undoubtedly the best way to show his yearning for freedom and the outside world. He portrays all the natural things that touch his soul with delicate colors, creating a flawless fancy world of poetry where humankind and nature live perfectly together.

The time you step into Qian Gang's painting world, you will find yourself in a boundless virtual universe of light. Qian Gang has been attentive to the relationship between reality and fiction. He pushes the boundary of its artistic possibility through painting, and takes fabled reality as the manifestation of longing for life. There is a strong sense of drama behind his work in forms, characters, decorative drawings, painting details, impressive techniques, skills and workmanship, or more specifically, the wrought symbolism. Whether it is the early black and white block prints or the latest surrealist flower-and-bird paintings, you will be deeply impressed with the narrative relationship contained in this concrete thing. His paintings, a vast range of colorful flowers and animals, are too rich for one’s eyes to take in in one go; they seem like a mysterious garden from a dream. The colors he uses and the objects he depicts are graceful and delicate, coming together to present something transportive. Sometimes he presents you with a bright and brilliant picture, like a spring breeze; and sometimes he paints bright and beautiful flowers against a dark, dull background to create a sense of coquettish charm.
